Collection of One Art
Bohemian’s Guild by Natsume-Books (Tokyo, January 2023)
This is an artwork by Mitsumasa Kadota that explores the expression of painting by displacing the fluctuations of his own feelings and senses with color and brush strokes under the theme of "versatility". On the right-hand side of the canvas, the way in which the highly saturated colors curiously have a sense of harmony while gushing forth without setting a single perspective is reminiscent of paper marbling (color floated on water and then the random pattern on the water surface is duplicated onto paper) which is used for book binding. The result of his direct expression of his sense of color and brushwork is perhaps a texture like the fluctuations of the water’s surface. The left side of the canvas is also covered with a plant vein-like texture on top of overlaid layers of color, causing an unrealistic impression of the microscopic world that can only be seen through a microscope. This artwork is known as a "double helix," it attempts to combine two seemingly incompatible representations painted in completely different ways. It seems to be the attitude of Kadota himself, who takes a multifaceted view of his complicated intertwining inner feelings from different angles and pursues their integration in various explorations of color and brushwork.
