赤と青、そのどちらがキレイでキタナイのか？などを、私たちは決めることができない。あるいは、東西や、精神と物質といったようなものの上下関係や、その強弱も、具体的に比べることなどできないはずだ。一見すると真逆に見える物事にも、実は結び付きがあったり、一方的な側面だけでは、把握できないこともある。「見ること 、それは眼を閉じること」。これはヴォルスの言葉で、私の第二冊目の作品集の巻末に、M画廊の三村さんが記してくれたものだ。多くの人の目に映る一方性が、必ずしも真実で、正しいとは限らない。「うつくしいもの」あるいは「退屈なもの」を捉えるためには、眼を閉じ、想像する力が不可欠だ。過去や背景、その因果も含めて、イメージや先入観を超えた先にある景色を見るためには、これまでとは異なる場所の、思いも寄らない不確かさがむしろ大切だと、私は信じている。
